Coastal Current Electrical provides electrical fault finding in Falmouth and across Cornwall for homes and businesses. If something isn’t working as it should, we accurately identify the cause and recommend the right repair.
Electrical fault finding in Falmouth: how we find the problem
Electrical faults can be caused by damaged wiring, faulty components, overloaded circuits, moisture or problems with appliances. Some faults are hard to trace without the right equipment and experience.
We use specialist test equipment, including insulation resistance, loop impedance and RCD testers, to trace faults methodically rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
Common electrical faults we fix
- Flickering or dimming lights
- Sockets that are not working
- Tripping circuits or an RCD that keeps tripping
- Repeatedly blown fuses
- Power loss to individual areas
- Faulty switches or sockets
- Damaged or deteriorated wiring
- Burning smells, scorch marks or warm sockets
- Intermittent electrical problems
What to do if your RCD keeps tripping
An RCD trips when it detects electricity leaking to earth. To narrow it down, switch off and unplug your appliances, reset the RCD, then plug them back in one at a time.
If it trips when one appliance is plugged in, that appliance is the likely cause. If it trips with everything unplugged, the fault is in the fixed wiring and needs an electrician. Never hold an RCD on or try to bypass it.
If you notice a burning smell, scorch marks or hot sockets, switch off at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so and call us. Electrical Safety First has more advice on staying safe with electricity at home, and businesses can find their legal duties in the HSE’s electrical safety guidance.
After we find the fault
Once we identify the source of the problem, we explain it in plain English and advise on the repair. Our fault-finding service helps prevent recurring problems and keeps your electrical system safe.
Recurring faults in older properties can be a sign the wiring is reaching the end of its life. In that case we’ll talk you through your electrical rewire options. We trace faults for homeowners through our domestic electrician service and for businesses through our commercial electrical services.

Electrical fault finding FAQs
Why does my electricity keep tripping?
Common causes include a faulty appliance, a damaged cable, an overloaded circuit or moisture getting into outdoor lights and sockets, which is common in coastal properties. If unplugging your appliances doesn’t stop the tripping, the fault is likely in the wiring and should be checked by an electrician.
How long does electrical fault finding take?
Many faults are found within a couple of hours, but intermittent faults can take longer to trace. We keep you updated and explain what we have found before carrying out any repair.
Is a flickering light dangerous?
Not always. It may be a loose bulb or an LED that doesn’t suit the dimmer. Flickering across several lights, or flickering with buzzing or a burning smell, can mean a loose connection and should be checked promptly.
Do you find faults in commercial properties?
Yes. We trace and repair faults in offices, shops, hospitality venues, workshops and industrial units, as well as homes.
